The Ultimate Durham Wellness Guide

Posted by Heather Darnell on Dec 27, 2017 11:51:40 AM

The glut of the holidays is over and it’s time to get your gluteus maximus in gear! We’re not just talking about your workout routine — in Durham, discover whole body, mind, and spirit wellness. Whether you’re motivated toward physical fitness, or hoping to prioritize rest and relaxation this year, discover respite in these Durham activities.

Engage your body and mind

Center yourself with yoga and meditation. Try classes like Yoga with Art, Yoga for Dudes, or Mindful Yoga Basics at Global Breathe Studio. Take your toes to Empower Dance Studio for worshipful and inclusive dance. In the Southpoint district, discover Arrichion Hot Yoga, a family-owned studio where you’ll sweat your way to a clearer mind. Engage your core with Pilates at InsideOut Body Therapies, which takes a holistic approach to healing and health. And if you want to explore your practice while exploring the skyline of downtown Durham, check out The Durham Hotel's Rooftop Yoga classes from LaVita Yoga.

Refresh with rest and relaxation

Get away for the day at a Durham spa. Enjoy low lighting and soothing music with a massage, nail treatment, and skin therapy from a Bella Trio Day Spa package. At The Retreat at Brightleaf, savor a warm stone massage and enjoy an exfoliating treatment to refine winter skin. Afterwards, enjoy lunch or a sweet treat at Rose’s, a bakery and restaurant right next door. In downtown, men can take a seat at Rock’s Bar and Hair Shop and enjoy a hot straight razor shave while sipping craft beer.

Try something new

If your 2018 New Year’s resolution includes adventure, consider curling and fencing. Durham’s Triangle Curling Club offers opportunities to try the Olympic sport at a dedicated curling facility. If you’ve ever wanted to wield a sword, try your hand at fencing with introductory lessons at Mid-South Fencers Club.

Lace up your tennis shoes

Make friends and join a Durham running group for a weekly run. The Carolina Godiva Track Club has a variety of runs that are open to the public. The Fullsteam Ahead! Bull City Run Club is great for both a post-work Wednesday run and a post-run beer with new friends. Runners can also join the Bull City Running Group on Saturdays for an 8-10 mile run on the American Tobacco Trail.

Stay well

It’s easy to stay healthy and relaxed when you visit Durham. Durham hotels offer spa and fitness facilities. The 21c Museum Hotel boasts robust spa services including in-room treatments. At The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club, play a few rounds of golf, use the fitness center, and take a dip in the indoor pool. At DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel Raleigh-Durham, play basketball, take a jog around the track, enjoy indoor and outdoor pools, or strike up a match on the tennis court.

Nourish your body and treat your taste buds

Don’t sacrifice flavor at the hands of your diet at Happy + Hale, Hungry Leaf, or ZenFish Poké Bar. Munch on sumptuous salads, good-for-you grain bowls and more. For a protein packed post-workout smoothie, stop by Xpert Nutrition. Don’t forget to stock up on healthy snacks from the bulk bins at the Durham Co-op Market.
