(VIDEO) No Bull: Durham, NC is Making Headlines

Posted by DCVB Staff on Apr 27, 2018 3:43:31 PM

Haven’t you heard? Durham is dope.

Yes – we knew that already – and we’re delighted that the secret is out. Pardon us while we acknowledge the obvious (they said it, not us)! Here, we wanted to take the time to offer five compelling arguments from national media outlets for believing the hype about our beloved Bull City.

A Southern Living Spotlight

In March of 2018, Southern Living bestowed the honor of “the most famous basketball rivalry in the South” to Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “No matter the side, this rivalry of blue is truly something to behold,” author Abigail Wilt writes. The piece goes on to quote former Durham mayor R.W. “Wense” Grabarek.  “I would say may the better team win…” he mused.  “…Duke is the better team.” We can’t help but agree!

Basking in Bon Appétit's praise

In October 2017, Bon Appétit documented “The Ultimate Walking Weekend in Durham, NC”, shouting out the downtown area and its eateries, accommodations, and culture.

Lucky’s Delicatessen,  Durty Bull Brewing CompanyBar Brunello and Bar Virgile, LittlerThe Durham Hotel, Cocoa Cinnamon, the Durham Farmer’s Market, American Meltdown, Pie Pushers, Dame’s Chicken and Waffles, Pizzeria Toro, Scratch, M Kokko , and M Sushi were profiled for their delectable menus. Runaway Clothing was also spotlighted for its swanky gear, and the piece listed hikes, runs and walks on the Al Buehler Cross Country Trail, the Sarah P. Duke Gardens and the Eno River State Park as ones not to miss.

Road Trip Tips From Teen Vogue

This February, Teen Vogue listed Durham in a list of “9 Unexpected Spring Break Road Trip Ideas” – urging readers to “forget about LA and New York” and make a trip to our contemporary city.

The Durham Hotel, Unscripted Durham and the 21c Museum Hotel were touted as delightful lodging options, and Dame’s Chicken and Waffles, Mateo Bar de Tapas, the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and the Durham Bulls Athletic Park were mentioned as unforgettable stops along the way.

Teen Vogue even took the time to highlight our exquisite street art via Mural Durham and our countless opportunities for outdoor adventures.

GQ's Great Review

GQ

Durham visitors, if you’ve wondered “Where to Drink, Eat, Sleep, and Chill with Lemurs in the South's Best Second City” – the April 2018 GQ article is a great place to start.

GQ offered compelling arguments for where to stay, what to do, and where to eat and drink.

The Durham Hotel and 21c Museum Hotel won writer Lisa Dunn’s heart as her highly recommended lodging options. Counting House, Backyard BBQ Pit, Picnic Durham, Saltbox Seafood Joint, King’s Sandwich Shop, Mateo Bar de Tapas, Dashi, The Federal, Bull City Burger and Brewery, The Lakewood, True Flavors Diner, and Rose’s Noodles, Dumplings & Sweets were on her list of places to chow down.

Ponysaurus Brewing, Durty Bull Brewing Company, Beer Study, Fullsteam, Bull City Ciderworks, and Durham Distillery made her list of best libations.

As for what to do, Dunn says, “Durham is a full-on dream for anyone who packs hiking boots and wind-resistant fleece wherever they go: from March through October, you can hike, bike, swim, kayak, canoe, and check out varying sports teams pretty much any day of the week.”

Eno River Quarry, the American Tobacco Trail, Durham Bulls Athletic Park, and the Duke Lemur Center are on her list of must-see attractions.

"World"ly Acclaim

And… we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention some additional accolades from U.S. News and World Report: they ranked Durham #17 in Best Places to Retire, #13 in Best Places to Live, and #13 in Best Affordable Places to Live.
